Yes, our city’s name is long
For as long as most of us can remember, residents have tried to come up with a shortened nickname for Hendersonville.
It used to be folks called it “Hooterville,” an ode to the fictional setting of 1960s-era situation comedies “Petticoat Junction” and “Green Acres.” You still hear it around town from time to time.
Although Hooterville has only three fewer letters than the 14 in Hendersonville, its three syllables roll off the tongue easier than the long four that have people searching for a shorter moniker.
By the 2000s, those of us who grew up affectionately referring to our town as Hooterville began getting blank stares from younger folks who had never seen or heard of “Petticoat Junction” and “Green Acres.” It was time for a newer, shorter, hipster name: Hendo……
